PS3 Manufacturing Costs Down

Could Sony be spending less money on its current-gen powerhouse?

According to TVG, Sony Corp’s CEO and Executive Vice President Nobuyuki Oneda mentioned on an overseas investors call that the manufacturing cost of the PlayStation 3 has been reduced by 70 percent since the original launch of the console.

“The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule,” said Oneda. When further inquiries were made, Oneda continued: “about 70 percent, roughly speaking.”

If this information is indeed correct, than this is fantastic for Sony, as the PS3 was rumored to cost a tremendous amount of money to manufacture when it was first released. This cost reduction would also make the rumored price cut — or the launch of the possible PS3 Slim — seem like inevitable events. We contacted a Sony representative for further confirmation regarding Oneda’s supposed comments, but we had yet to receive anything official at the time this article was written.
