Heat on Hold

Gearbox gives up on film adaptation.

Gearbox Software’s long overdue take on the classic film Heat is on indefinite hold, though the studio’s Randy Pitchford has opened the door for anyone who wants to snap up the licence.

Heat was announced back in 2006, and was a joint effort between Regency Enterprises, Titan Productions and Gearbox Software that was to tackle Michael Mann’s 1995 blockbuster. Few details emerged about the game, and while the developers originally intended to get De Niro and Pacino on-board, Heat has been in a state of limbo since it was first revealed.

Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford doused any hopes of the game seeing the light of day having given an update on the project. “In a nutshell, we’re nowhere,” Pitchford saidin a recent interview

That’s not to say that there’s no prospect for a future take on the film; “We’re not keeping the IP locked down anymore,” Pitchford continued, “If somebody else were in a spot where they could do it, and everybody was comfortable with that, then conceivably that could happen.”

Simultaneous Retail and Digital Releases ‘Not Anywhere Close

Shane Kim details 360’s Games on Demand.

Xbox Live’s forthcoming Games on Demand service will see new titles released sometime after they hit retail stores – a situation that’s likely to remain for the foreseeable future.

Microsoft’s Shane Kim spoke about the details in a recent interview with Fastcompany, picked up by Shacknews. “There are a lot of complex issues to deal with here,” said Kim, “especially if you start talking about day-and-date release with retail availability–which is not something that we’re talking about at all, today”.

One of the biggest hurdles in the way of simultaneous digital and physical releases is the retailers themselves – who Microsoft are keen not to upset. “We have great relationships with the retail channel” said Kim “They’re important partners. We sell a lot of hardware and software through retail channels. We have to be smart about how we approach this business.”
