CryEngine 3 Now in the Hands of Third-Party Developers

CryEngine 3′s officially ready for third-party consumption, and Crytek’s released a new trailer to celebrate. Despite Crytek’s jaunt into console land, the trailer’s still bonkers beautiful. Don’t believe us? See for yourself. Or, if you’d rather read about the feast your eyes are gearing up to scarf down, look at this:

“CryENGINE 3 also introduces CryENGINE 3 Live Create™,” reads the press release. “It allows developers to work with a single editor, but see and play the results in real-time on PC, PS3 and Xbox360, hooked up to a single dev PC. The engine takes care of the conversion and optimization of assets in real-time; enables instant, cross-platform changes to any part of game creation and as a result materially increases the speed, quality and significantly reduces the risk of multiplatform development.”

Granted, everyone and their ITT Tech professor is developing cross-platform games these days, but we still think this has the potential to radically alter the triple-A game development scene. Less muss and fuss over the eccentricities of other videogame platforms (*cough*PS3*cough*) could lead to faster development cycles. And developers might also end up saving a buck or two here, which is never a bad thing. This is all just speculation on our part, though.

Would any game developers in the audience care to enlighten us?

G.I. Joe: A Real American Failure

August NPD numbers show that EA’s movie tie-in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra fizzled on store shelves last month. Despite being connected to a moderately popular film, the game version was panned by critics and ignored by gamers. According to NPD, no version of the game sold even 35,000 units in its debut month.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is based off a movie, which is based off a TV show, which is based off a toy line. Somehow, that didn’t translate into something people wanted to play. The Xbox 360, which sold best, has a 4.4 average rating on Gamestats. Apparently that was enough to scare consumers away.

Madden Sales Numbers Shaky

NPD sales numbers just arrived on our desks and one undeniable fact that we could glean from the data is that people still enjoy Madden football.

Madden NFL 10, which launched on August 15, sold just shy of one million copies on Xbox 360 and a hair more than 650K on PlayStation 3. While the number of Xbox 360 copies sold was down just slightly from last year, PS3 increased its year-over-year sales by about 20K copies.

Sadly the same good news does not spread to the PS2 and Wii versions of Madden NFL 10. In August 2008 Madden on PS2 sold over 400K units, while this year it was only able to push a bit more than 150K out the door at retailers. The decline wasn’t as large for Madden on Wii, but it’s certainly notable. Last year the game was in the top ten for game sales, but this time around it dropped out of the top 10 on the list with total units sold dropping significantly.

The drop in PS2 sales is understandable because of the relative age of the system, but the decline in the Wii version is more interesting considering the game took a different approach this year. It was streamlined, leaving out many of the hardcore features gamers have come to expect from Madden including a Franchise Mode that can only be unlocked through a cheat code.
